With the right attitude, you'll enjoy every sport here!

FOR WHAT REASONS?

We have enthusiastic parents, friends and staff who have offered their time and services to coach our children here at Flaxmere School.  We can never fully show how much we appreciate the time and effort involved.

At our school there are sports like:

basketball

canoe polo

volleyball

netball

soccer

jump jam

tee ball

softball

hockey

touch

ripper rugby

padder tennis

You name it, we've got them all at our school, and we're so proud of it! Students develop skills in every sport from our pee-wee junior players through to our senior students. Every year our students progress in skill, and attitudes are constantly evolving.

Many of our students are selected for the various Hawkes Bay Representative Teams including: Basketball, Ross Shield Rugby, Netball, and Canoe Polo.

Our school basketball teams are the best around. In 2005 several boys from our school were in the Heretaunga Under-14 Representative Team which won the National Championship!

Our Year 5 & 6 basketball team has been the best team in Hawkes Bay in 2005 and 2006. Many players from our school are also in the Hawkes Bay Under-13 Representative Team.

Our Canoe Polo teams are outstanding! The Year 5 & 6 (Flames) were the best team in Hawkes Bay in 2006 and our Year 7 & 8 Team (Infernos) was the 2nd best team in Hawkes Bay in their age group and hopefully we can finally win that coveted trophy in 2007.

For the future of these students, we'd love to see them maintain their efforts and to go further in life, perhaps even to be recognised worldwide.

RECREATION

During our interval, or break time, the school has a variety of recreational activities for students to enjoy, such as basketball, cricket, netball, walking on stilts (high and low stilts), skipping, rugby, touch rugby, volleyball, badminton, padder tennis, and soccer.

NETBALL! …..NETBALL!….. NETBALL!…..

Here at Flaxmere School we have 6 netball teams and they are skilled little players! During the winter season there are netball training sessions for the younger grades during lunch times and after school. The senior grades have their training between 7:30am-8:15am twice during the week and some lunch and after school hours. Coaches and players negotiated their time to suit everyone ….. all part of the team spirit.  There are awesome netball players here at Flaxmere School. Every year there is always an inter-school netball competition going on here in the Flaxmere Region and our school participates in it. From the senior grades down to the juniors, they are very competitive.  Flaxmere netballers are recognised through representative games such as those organised in the Hastings Netball Council area.

The focuses in netball here in our school are:

  • Developing skills and enhancing the latest rules
  • Improving attitude and behaviour
  • Showing good sportsmanship
  • Accepting decisions made
  • Being ambassadors
  • Leading students into another area of netball i.e. player to coach, coach to umpire, umpire to organiser/co-ordinator.
VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball is alive and well at Flaxmere School!

Our two senior teams compete in a local mid-week competition and have a history of success.

Several staff members are involved in coaching the teams and interest amongst the younger students, who enjoy a hit around during lunchtimes, remains high.
FLAXMERE
TOUCH
     RUGBY
              TEAMS.
LEARN THE SKILLS AND YOU WILL GO FAR WITH THE GAME OF TOUCH!

F.P.S.
WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!

The name of the game is TOUCH RUGBY.
Students are full of it, ENERGETIC!
Stimulated coaches, enthusiastic students are what we look for.

The time that teachers and parent helpers have given these students has meant they have progressed quickly and by knowing this, individual students are gradually showing their talents when challenged by other participating schools.
Touch Rugby is a very competitive, fun, skilled type of game, a learning experience and also develops fair play attitudes and behaviour towards other players.

At Flaxmere School we have a pee-wee team, year 3&4 team, year 5&6 team and a year 7&8 team.  Without the volunteer coaches, our students' skills wouldn't have progressed so far.

CRICKET

Cricket is a popular game at Flaxmere Primary School. Whenever students are out of class there is always a big group at the artificial wicket, or at the other two grass wickets, playing energetically - batting, bowling or fielding.

The real enthusiasts play on Saturdays, and practise in their respective teams twice/three times a week. Both the seniors and the juniors love to knock out the stumps, or to smash a huge hit to the boundary. They don't win all their matches. Often their ability to bat well lets them down. But they are keen. We do have some Hastings age grade reps. These cricketers have real talent, and if they really apply themselves, have a future in the game.

This year two very keen and able coaches are taking the teams, one a volunteer from the local community centre, and the other, a Flaxmere School parent. The teacher in charge  helps with the coaching and organising and is also involved on Saturday mornings during the season.

Flaxmere Primary students are serious about playing cricket well. They practise the skills, and they are learning the cricket culture - the team work, the sportsmanship and the way to behave. Best of all they are having fun, and occasionally, yes they do win!
