Playing, Thinking, Learning, Having Fun with Junior Maths
The children develop mathematical knowledge through a problem solving approach whilst using an activity based maths programme. The programme develops the children’s mathematical abilities through gradual developed steps of increased concepts and skills. Ability and understanding is monitored on a daily basis, by the teacher, ensuring that children progressat their own pace. Pictured a hands on session on capacity. Small groups of children co-operated and used different technologies to produce different flavoured cakes. They had to read, follow instructions (procedure) and measure out accurately. Measuring tools included, kitchen scales, cups, table and teaspoons. All enjoyed the tasting session! |

It is the principle of the New Zealand Curriculum Framework that all students should be enabled to achieve personal standards of excellence and that all students have a right to the opportunity to achieve to the maximum of their potential. At Flaxmere Primary we incorporate a wide range of resources and technology to help our students work towards this potential. Regular professional development by our teaching staff also continues to feed new ideas and approaches into the teaching of mathematics. We are confident in the fact that we are achieving this simply by the observing the enthusiasm with which our children view maths. Regardless of age, our children enjoy the "play" factor of our mathematics programme. They are given the opportunity to translate their understanding of the mathematics processes into everyday experiences. We continue to build on resources available having recently incorporated media now available on the every growing web. These sites allow our children to gain and refine the very important problem solving strategies. These strategies will continue to assist our children in whatever life long pursuit they choose. |
