Our school has a policy that children have homework every night of the week except for Friday night. For junior pupils this usually takes the form of a book to read , spelling words to learn and a letter or language activity. For senior pupils, there are a variety of activities, covering research, maintenance of maths facts, reading and language activities. After school, the library and computer room
are available for children to use under supervision.
HINTS FOR PARENTS: ENGLISH Oral language - Walk to school with them or meet them after school and use the time to have a conversation with them. Talk about events and activities that have taken place or are coming up. Watch the news together and discuss interesting items. Written Language - Encourage them to write letters, postcards, thank-you notes, memos etc. Reading - Read stories to them. Listen to them read to you. Encourage them to read for pleasure, read the paper, smaller children could read the advertising junk mail and talk about what they see. There are three words that can help when children have difficulty reading to you: GENERAL Have a quiet place available for the children to do their homework. Get away from the television, even turn it off while they do it. Some children like to listen to music [quiet] while working –use a walkman. Take an interest in their work but do not take over and do it for them. If they cannot do it they need to discuss it with their teacher. INTERNET We use the google search engine for most of our internet searching. Students are encouraged to ask a question about what they want to know, then identify 2 or more keywords to use when they search for an answer. Finding the same answer on more than one site is recommended because not all websites are accurate. Taking note of the website addresses (http://...) is also important because we should acknowledge the source of the information.
