| Yes! The Social Studies curriculum
is up and running with the teachers working through the strands as set
out by our two year cyclic plan.
Out of the 1998 initiative year
came a new policy, planning documents and a system for locating Social
Studies resources. This is accessed through a data base system. Resources
are being bought according to the requirements of teachers and strand components.
We have the new government support resource kit which is presently being
organised and accessed for the data base.
Teachers are feeling confident
with what has been set in place and are looking at students’ needs and
setting realistic assessment criteria through the learning outcomes.
Teachers at the same time
are striving to improve their own teaching and students’ learning of Social
Studies topics. Interest is one way to hold students’ attention on a topic,
as the middle school found out when learning about Ancient Egypt and the
building of the pyramids. Enthusiasm is evident in the projects being undertaken
by all 5 classes.
