Maori Cultural Groups

Flaxmere Primary School offers the children the opportunity to participate in the junior, middle or senior Maori culture groups depending on their age.

The children perform regularly as groups and participate in the regional festival that occurs annually.

These Maori culture groups allow the children to feel proud of their performance and a sense of well-being for their achievement.

Cook Islands Group

Flaxmere Primary School has a teacher who grew up in the Cook Islands and she is pictured here with the group who chose to learn dances from the  Islands. There are usually between 2 and 5 pupils from the 'Cooks'attending our school. Many of these dancers are also in the Maori Cultural Group and the Samoan Cultural Group.

Samoan Group

We have a growing number of Samoan families attending our school. One of our Samoan parents has taught the pupils traditional Samoan dances for several years.

Senior School Musical Production

During Term 3, 150 middle and senior school children took part in a major musical production entitled “RATS”. This was the first production for many years and was such a success that we intend it becoming an annual event.  There were 6 performances over four days, and at least 1600 children from nearby schools attended the show, as well as a great number of adults.

We were privileged to have the Mayor of Hastings attend a performance and we received a wonderful letter from him afterwards.  He stated “What a magnificent and inspired evening I was able to enjoy. In every respect I was stunned by what I saw.”

Next year our junior children will have their turn.

END OF YEAR CONCERT

Each year we finish with a concert where each team of classes performs an item for all familes associated with the school. These pictures show parts of the item produced by the children in the Year 3 and 4 team (7 and 8 year olds.) It was all about different cultures learning to co-operate. In this case, the cultural differences were those between robots and androids, in a far off galaxy!
