The library has a fulltime
librarian who has responsibility for the day to day management of the library,
including responsibility for the student librarians, issuing and returning
books, preparing books and other resources for use in the school and entering
new resources on the accession computer.
When new books are purchased
they are classified to ensure that maximum use is made of them. Increasingly
sophisticated awareness of genre, visual language, and requirements of
the curriculum in areas other than English are enabling a greater variety
of key words to be entered, thereby ensuring that cross curicular use can
be made of individual titles.
The library programme used
in the library is Karant.
The library has a budget of
$10,000 and a collection of about 6,500 volumes. Our purchasing policy
is set each year in conjunction with major school curriculum focus. Purchasing
with reference to the long term plans of teaching teams, ensures that book
resources are available to support in-class learning programmes.
The collection includes several
encyclopaedia and other reference books, but an increasing amount of reference
material is being purchased in the form of CDRom. This has the advantage
of being more up to date than reference books and often cheaper to purchase.
There are two issuing computers
in the library and one computer used for search. The computer suite on
the mezzanine floor with five computers is currently used in conjunction
with the special needs programme,"Successmaker", and with the after school
homework programme. It has also been used by students for research work.
Our new library has a spacious
environment suitable for whole class, small group or independent learning
activities. Our research area provides a working space for students which
is well utilised. |
